I don’t know if there is a term for a beard & moustache groupie … but if there is … I think I’m one of them! I started early — my sweetheart of a dad was forced to cultivate a moustache for at least 15 years because I begged him to grow one when I was little. That said, there was no way that I was going to miss the National Beard & Moustache Championships when I found out that they were being held nearby!
Beard Team USA, which represents the United States at the World Beard and Moustache Championships, hosted the Second Annual Beard Team USA National Beard and Moustache Championships last weekend at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster.
Cash prizes totaling $5000 were awarded amongst the winners of several categories. Judges for the event included 10-time world beard champion Willi Chevalier of Germany; former Pittsburgh Steelers center Justin Hartwig; Jason Thiel, member of the USA Eagles Rugby team; Juliann Sheldon, Miss Pennsylvania 2011; and Jen Bricker (Josie Cuervo) a member of the Dutchland Rollers Roller Derby Team.
One would assume that in an entire baseball stadium full of fantastically outlandish facial hair and costumes my normal case of “helmet hair” would go completely unnoticed. Think again. The dude below expressed almost the same level of shock that I caused at Knoebels Grove this spring 🙂
I arrived just as the participants (from quite a few states and even a handful of other nations) were parading down the stadium steps. Master of Ceremonies Jack Passion, author and multiple-time world beard champion winner, introduced contestants as they approached the stage — each group or individual had their own theme music heralding their arrival.
World Famous “Free Style” Beard Champion, Willi Chevalier was on hand to judge the competition. A treat to see him in person! Coolest. Beard. Ever.

This gentleman knows how to accessorize! Never leave home without your penny farthing.
Toot Joslin (who went on to win the Partial Beard category) makes his entrance.
