Larry Cultrera’s Diner Hotline is one of my favorite blogs. If you are a regular RoadsideWonders reader, you may remember when I tried my best to recreate his 1980 picture of the American Dream Diner back in December (okay, okay, I admit that “Mr.” RoadsideWonders actually made the most successful attempt). 🙂
A few weeks ago, Larry posted some photos of the Highspire Diner from 1982 and I knew that I’d have to attempt the “time machine” again.
I had the chance to stop by the diner yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a copy of Larry’s picture with me so I just had to wing it. It isn’t a perfect match, but it’s good enough for a rousing game of “What’s Different and What’s the Same”.
You’ll notice that the signage has been replaced (even the town’s firetruck crossing sign has been updated). It’s a shame … I love that awesome arrow sign pointing to offstreet parking in the 1982 picture.
The interior of the Highspire is just gorgeous. I didn’t take any photos because it was very crowded at the time — but click here and scroll to the bottom for a picture from The Patriot-News in 2008.
I had a great grilled cheese sandwich and enjoyed listening to groups of older men gathered at the diner to shoot the sh*t 🙂 I have to admit that diners with blaring televisions are one of my pet peeves … but in this case, it was fun listening to these men call out answers to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and The Family Feud while good-naturedly disparaging one another.
Wendy, I never noticed the “dent” on the corner trim until I saw your photo. It is in my photo too.
Funny that you should mention that. I noticed it when I was there taking the pic and I figured that it would be one of “the changes” until I saw it in your 1982 shot 🙂
Too funny – I had the Highspire on my list of places to check out yesterday but we ran out of time. It would’ve been funny to run into each other!
I was actually at the Highspire on Friday afternoon … but I kept my eyes peeled for you & Cliff when I was in HBG yesterday.
Did you have the chance to visit Atomic Warehouse?
When I lived in Highspire, you could go there after fighting a fire and they would give you a cup of coffee to warm your insides. That was when the old fire house was there.
… and a well deserved cup of coffee that would be!
