I stopped in Tucumcari and took pictures of the murals along Route 66 … some pretty cool stuff. This man (pictured at left) stopped and chatted, He told us that he is in one of the town’s many murals. I learned from him, and from two other ladies, that the artists featured many local folks in their work.

Most of Tucumcari’s murals were created by the husband and wife team of Sharon and Doug Quarles. This mural is The Legendary Road and it measures a whopping 14 feet x 114 feet!!!! I love that Suzanne took detailed pics of different segments of the mural — some are included in the animated gif below and the others are in the gallery at the end of this post.

  1. When I worked in public broadcasting I had a favorite caller who loved to chat and chat about all manner of topics, mostly about his favorite programs, but sometimes about his travels. A couple years ago I told him I was going to New Mexico and he asked if I was going to Tucumcari. I looked it up online while we talked and knew it was way out of the way for our itinerary, so I told him I’d put it on my “to do” list.

I heard from a former co-worker last week that this guy has been calling and calling, looking for me, and I told her I’d send him a note, letting him know I’m fine. I just printed out this page to include in the note. I doubt I will get to Tucumcari anytime in the near future, but at least I got to see a bit of what I’m missing.

  2. Okay, that is one awesome mural. Really, what’s cooler than Route 66?!?!?!? And this captures the feel of it. That might be a place I actually get to someday. Nice shots.
