Jo, a frequent (and totally awesome) contributor , just made my night …. heck, she made my week! The iconic 23-foot giant donut atop the Randy’s Donuts drive-thru in Inglewood is my personal “HOLY GRAIL of ROADSIDE WONDERMENT”! When I was little, I went to Randy’s with my grandparents and I used to have the coolest picture of me posed in front of the building. Unfortunately, that photo was lost in a flood and I don’t believe that there were any other copies of it.
Someday, when my $$ and vacation time planets align, Randy’s will be the western terminus of my motorcycle trip across the United States.
Check out some great links and an “inside look” video at the end of this post!
Randy’s Donuts opened in the early 1970s; but was originally a Big Donut Drive-In when the building was constructed in 1952. At one time, there were as many as 10 Big Donut Drive-In locations. In addition to Randy’s — 4 other giant donuts still exist in the greater Los Angeles area. I hope that they are all still there when I get the chance to visit once again!
The giant donut has been featured in numerous movies, television series, and music videos. Just a few that you may recognize: Iron Man 2, The Golden Child, Earth Girls Are Easy, Californication, Mars Attacks, Coming to America, Problem Child 2, Into the Night, Stripped To Kill, Love Letters, Breathless, Randy Newman’s ‘I Love LA’, Prodigy’s ‘Wind It Up’, Arrested Development, and probably many more that I’ve missed!
