The Cardiff Giant
The Cardiff Giant
Fenimore Farmers Museum
Cooperstown, New York
The Cardiff Giant was one of the most famous hoaxes in American history. I visited him at the Fenimore Museum (a cool little museum featuring Cooperstown area agricultural history and the life of legendary author James Fenimore Cooper and his family)
WOW! I remember reading about The Cardiff Giant in my 6th grade reading book – it never occurred to me that he might still be around! Totally putting him on the Retro Roadmap places to check out map. Thanks for the info!
When you see “him” in person, it’s hard to believe that people forked-over a days wages back in the day just to get a look at him!
You know, I wanted to visit the Farmers Museum BEFORE I realized that the famous Cardiff Giant is there. That’s such a fascinating case about archaeology and gullibility. Now I **REALLY** want to go to the Farmers Museum. I also like that, before it went to its resting place in Cooperstown, the Giant was in some guy’s “basement rumpus room.” Because of course.
Isn’t rumpus room the BEST term that no one uses anymore? 🙂
