The town of Nackawic was created in the late 1960’s to accommodate those who were forced to relocate as the result of the construction of the Mactaquac Dam. From 1970 – 2004, the town’s largest employer was the St. Anne Nqackawic Pulp Company. The giant axe was built in 1991 to memorialize the importance of the Forestry Industry in New Brunswick. It’s frequently the site of celebrations and concerts.
Check out the specs according to Wikipedia:
15 meters (49 feet) tall
weighs over 55 tons
axe-head is 7 meters (23 feet) wide
And, best of all, there is a time capsule embedded in the head of the axe! I’m a big fan of time capsules.
This is fantastic!! We have a very large hand trowel here in Des Moines (Iowa) that is actually a Claes Oldenburg sculpture… but it is puny compared to this! Great photos!
